A Stirring of Dust was the first of three professionally published tie-in books created in conjunction with Forever Knight. It was written by Susan Sizemore, and published in April 1997 by Boulevard Books (Berkeley Publishing Group), New York.

When A Stirring of Dust was published, many fans reacted negatively to the cover. As a result, Susan M. Garrett posted a challenge to FORKNI-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU, offering a prize for the best fan-created bookcover. Although the rules stipulated that this should be a cover design for a "general" Forever Knight novel, two of the contestants, Jennifer Rayburn and Sandy Choo, instead submitted alternative covers for A Stirring of Dust.
