Story Recap[]

After the events of "Last Knight", LaCroix gets Don Constantine to cover it all up, and then takes Nick away.

Notes[]

  • Written as a gift for Astolat in the Yuletide 2016 gift exchange. Length: 13,543 words.
  • This is the type of Last Knight story in which Natalie dies and LaCroix takes Nick away.
  • The author employs the non-canonical terms "fledgling" and "childe" to refer to Nick's relationship with his master, as well as having LaCroix think of him as his son.

Quotes[]

LaCroix hesitated at the door to Nicholas's room. Sooner or later he would have to go in and pull out the wooden staff keeping Nicholas trapped on the verge of death. It wasn't like LaCroix to put off the inevitable, but he found himself reluctant to wake Nicholas knowing what would follow: the anger, the recrimination, the never-ending accusations. But if that was the price LaCroix had to pay to have his son alive, he would pay it. He would much rather have Nicholas alive to hate him than an eternity filled with the meaningless gratitude of a dead son. And yet he kept stalling, unwilling to resume his role as villain in Nicholas's life.

Comments[]

  • "[...] I just want to tell you THANK YOU SO MUCH. This was such a satisfying Last Knight fix for me in every way. I so love that you resolved the push and pull between them by giving Lacroix the power to easily and trivially compel the obedience he's been trying to compel in every other way all their lives, and the way you had that turn their relationship on its head, making Nick into the pursuer instead of the pursued. And Janette! You gave me Janette! Who I love so much, and I especially love that here she is neither the yenta nor ready to forgive Nick or even Lacroix, but also not broken or sunk in bitterness. Thank you so so much again for an amazing Yuletide! <3 <3 <3" — excerpted from comment by Astolat on AO3
  • "Okay, I love this premise, how you wrote it -- especially the insight into Lacroix. Nick is just perfect in this, as is Janette. Everything was just so spot on and it was such a great read!! Thank god I checked the page for new fics because this was incredible!!" — comment by imladrissun on AO3
  • "[...] With Janette now brought back over by Nick and Francesca dead, I wonder if Nick is the new next-to-eldest of Qa'ra's line. Perhaps it's just as well for LaCroix's continued good health that you gave the story an UFfish conclusion! If they should fall out again in the future, it may prove a fatal mistake for him to have explained it all.... / This is a very thought-provoking story; and both the conversations between LaCroix and Janette, and those with Nick, are completely in character. I really enjoyed reading it." — excerpted from comment by greerwatson on AO3
