He had dealt with Nicholas, in his own way. He had dealt with his son’s pet human. Soon their mortal colleagues would also be dealing with the situation, in their own way. Before that happened, LaCroix had to ensure that they would find traces of nothing of importance.
Comments[]
- ""Last Knight" presents so many opportunities to contemplate what happened next. I appreciated how in this story, LaCroix comes across as both cold in his practicality and also deeply sentimental at the same time. Keeping the paintings because they have meaning despite not liking them is such a prime example of that sentimental streak. To be honest, DNA scrubbing aside, this really *is* what it's like to go through a loved one's stuff after they pass." — excerpted from comment by SwitchbladeEyes on AO3
- "That's a very fine ending line: "Finally, now and forever, he could keep Nicholas with him." It articulates a new realization for the character into this individual story, while also bringing the entire disaster full circle to Lacroix's behaviors at the root of all the struggles, and it further suddenly breaks out of the rigorous present and backward-looking moment that has been this narration up to this point and encompasses a future... a future "with" Nick, in the most absurdly tragic and hollow way imaginable, asserting victory in a void of defeat." — excerpted from comment by Brightknightie on AO3
- "There is so much suppressed emotion in this piece! Ever pragmatic, LaCroix does what is necessary for his kind to remain in the shadows. Still, his reflections on the nature of so many of the items he salvaged from Nick’s loft shows the depth of his feelings for their former owner. The careful treatment of a few strands of Nick’s hair almost had me in tears. A perfect application of the prompt." — comment by Dlyt on AO3
- "I do think LaCroix is very smart to have homed in on the DNA/forensics situation. It really could be the end of their secret world. It's easy to see how he has survived all this time and protected the Community as well. It really is essential to keep learning and keep up with the times." — excerpted from comment by Calliope24 on AO3
