After "Ashes to Ashes", Nick leaves LaCroix to finish cremating Divia and flies slowly home, where he finds Natalie waiting for him.

The author non-canonically refers to LaCroix as Nick's "sire".

Nick was reluctant to leave his sire to tend to the remains of Divia, LaCroix's mortal daughter and immortal mother. The reason for his hesitation was twofold: Nick wasn't certain that LaCroix would be able to destroy his daughter for the second time and watch as her body was consumed by the fire, but mostly, Nick didn't want to leave his father without a companion during a time of such emotional upwelling. LaCroix, of course, insisted that he was fine and quickly built an emotional barrier to protect such thoughts that might be considered weak to his favorite son. It was so that Nick left his father as he took to the nighttime sky.
