* "I enjoyed this a lot! This very interesting glimpse into the intricacies of Lacroix's mind reveals a rationale for his actions that is more worthy of the Roman strategist he is than the superficial desire for revenge which the episode seems to convey." — excerpted from comment by PJ1228 on AO3

* "It's one of our ever-open questions, the precise motivations and actions, whether planned or impulse, behind what Janette and Lacroix did that night in Paris in 1228! I appreciate how your "Knight of the Rose" overlaps that question with the events at Castle Brabant (and implicitly, eventually at Azure). The "for Janette, then for Lacroix" layering is clever on its own terms, and then with an extra tang from the prompt context." — excerpted from comment by Brightknightie on AO3

* "I find this an interesting exploration of LaCroix’s concepts of mastery and self-control, and his incredible ability to take the long view. He wishes to master himself at first and deny the nature of his interest in Nicolas, so as to allow Janette her pleasure. But when forced to choose between Nicolas and Fleur, he acknowledges his true desire and sets up the long-term agreement which he hopes will bring Nicolas to him. I was fascinated as I read." — comment by dlyt on AO3

Quotes

It was much for [Janette] to ask: immortality for the man she loved. Or thought she loved. LaCroix was older and wiser, and knew that Janette would tire of her knight, sooner than later. After which, he would still be bound to them by shared blood. LaCroix had few children; but he could feel them all, their bond attenuated by distance. Did he want to bring that lissome blond into the fold?
