Story Recap[]

Captain Reese and Captain Stonetree discuss “things” after the events of "Last Knight".

Notes[]

Written for FK Fic Fest 2023 (released 1 July) to the prompt "keeping secrets". Length: 875 words.

Quotes[]

“How long has it been?” said Joe Stonetree, an already retired captain.

“Long enough,” Reese said, “I just hope I get to enjoy [my retirement]. You wouldn’t believe the list of things Denise has got for me to do.”

“Oh, I’ve been there, Joe,” said Stonetree with a small laugh, “Been there, done that.”

“Anyway, Congrats and all that, but what did you want to talk about? You sounded rather mysterious earlier when you said you had some things to tell me.”

“Yes,” said Reese. “Some developments on our favorite we-aren’t-gonna-talk-about-it case.”

Comments[]

  • "The progression here is interesting. Reese initially laughs off the paranormal reporter's question, but it seems to have planted a seed. LaCroix showing up seemed suspicious, and a new detective with the same behaviors as Nick arrives on the scene. By the end, Reese can't dismiss the possibility the reporter raised. Reese does a sanity check with Stonetree, who does not dismiss the possibility either. Gotta be unnerving for Reese. Nice job!" — excerpted from comment by Switchbladeeyes on AO3
  • "Another revealing conversation between these two! I'm not surprised that they prefer to meet in a public park in broad daylight. And who are these mysteriously similar newcomers? Presumably not actually Nick and Natalie, since Reese has met them. Tempting to imagine they are, though." — comment by greerwatson on AO3
    • "I hadn't thought of their being Nick and Nat. Would be an intriguing situation." — reply by WaltD on AO3
  • "When the story reaches Reese's telling of the newcomer, my mind went to a "meta" approach, envisioning the series being rebooted, populated by a new cast living new stories, blithely right in the very midst of the survivors of the original, still living their lives, off-screen, as you imagine them here." — excerpted from comment by Brightknightie on AO3
    • "Series Reboot. Sure would be possibility. Perfect set up for it." — reply by WaltD on AO3
  • "I like the progression of these conversations between the two Captains over the years. There are cases that haunt practitioners in law enforcement, and Nick’s disappearance looks like the one that actively haunts them, with help from reporters and the ever-creepy/frightening LaCroix." — excerpted from comment by dlyt on AO3
  • I really enjoying witnessing these conversations between the two captains. It's an interesting reminder of how time is marching on for the mortals who were peripherally involved with all the goings on surrounding Nick in Toronto. I can imagine the need to touch base with the only other person who knows what it feels like to have this magnitude of a secret."" — excerpted from comment by Calliope24 on AO3
